Chicago Terminal Railway

Intro

Chicago Terminal Railroad operates three segments of track in the city and suburbs, serving a variety of industries. The Railroad connects to Union Pacific at the North Avenue and Elk Grove locations, and to Canadian Pacific at the Bensenville location.

History

The oldest part of the Chicago Terminal Railroad was originally part of the Chicago and Evanston Railroad, which was later part of the Milwaukee Road. The north end of this line became the CTA Red Line, but the section just north of the loop survives partly due the City of Chicago's decision several years ago to redevelop industrial corridors.

The Elk Grove and Bensenville lines were built to serve the Elk Grove Village Industrial Park, the largest postwar industrial development site in Illinois. The site was located adjacent to O'Hare Airport to provide good air cargo access, but over 100 companies were rail customers at the peak of rail usage.
