Engineer/Conductor for Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Railroad

Iowa Pacific Holdings, LLC (IPH) is a holding company for a series of freight and passenger railroads across the country. This position is for a Locomotive Engineer and Conductor for our Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Railway Business Unit located in Watsonville, CA.  The Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Railway operates freight service as well as passenger train service for scenic and dining excursions between Watsonville, CA and Davenport, CA which is about 75 miles south of San Francisco.  The ideal candidate will be a certified Engineer and Conductor and would be willing to perform other maintenance duties along the railroad’s 32 mile corridor.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs Daily Locomotive Inspections
  2. Conducts the movement of rail cars and train movements; signal crew member(s) for movement of the engine or train using lantern, hand and/or flag signals or radio to indicate when to start, stop, back-up or set or release air brakes.
  3. Prepares required daily reports; switch lists – manually or with a computer.
  4. Observes radio and hand signals and operates locomotive in accordance with railroad rules and regulations.
  5. Applies knowledge of territory, including terrain, grades, curves, and grade crossings, in order to give prescribed warning signals and to otherwise operate the train in a safe manner.
  6. Main point of contact to Dispatch and other yard workers to issue and receive information concerning stops, delays, switching, etc.
  7. Reads and interprets wayside signals, track warrants and bulletins, and railroad rules and regulations to operate locomotive, following safety rules and regulations and time schedule.
  8. Provides assistance in maintaining infrastructure at railroad facilities and along tracks.
  9. Help with routine maintenance requests.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Certified Conductor and Engineer.
  3. 3 years of experience on a railroad is preferred.
  4. Ability to read and comprehend written safety rules, procedure and safety manuals, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos and other work-related information.
  5. Highly organized and detailed oriented.
  6. Ability to pass training and required testing.
  7. Ability to think and act quickly in responding to emergency and non-emergency situations.
  8. Ability to make independent judgments using sound reasoning skills and knowledge base.
  9. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
